Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
